Basically grown for their foliage and not for the flower, these are unusual orchids with really interesting leaves. The green and yellow flowers are small but numerous, on a tall spike that comes out of the center of the plant. But few people grow them for the dinky little blooms. It's the leaves that matter. They are dark green with lovely silvery stripes. These are tropical warm growers that can be planted in the ground in tropical climates, and grown in pots elsewhere. They like full shade and lots of water. These orchids are native to parts of Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Belize and Panama, where they grow in the woods and rain forests. We grow these in potting soil, and we try never to let them try out completely. Fertilize very weakly every couple of weeks. You are buying the kind of plant pictured. These are in four-inch pots and have leaves that are 5 or 6 inches long already. They can get to be one to two feet across. These are great for windowsill growers, as they don't take up much space. Just make sure it's a shady window. Makes an excellent terrarium plant. You are purchasing one seedling. We always ship the largest. Allow to dry almost (but not quite) completely between waterings.
