Basically grown for their foliage and not for the flower, these are unusual orchids with really interesting leaves. The green and yellow flowers are small but numerous, on a tall spike that comes out of the center of the plant. But few people grow them for the dinky little blooms. It's the leaves that matter. They are dark green with lovely silvery stripes. These are tropical warm growers that can be planted in the ground in tropical climates, and grown in pots elsewhere. They like full shade and lots of water. These orchids are native to parts of Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Belize and Panama, where they grow in the woods and rain forests. We grow these in potting soil, and we try never to let them try out completely. Fertilize very weakly every couple of weeks. You are buying the kind of plant pictured. These are in four-inch pots and have leaves that are 5 or 6 inches long already. They can get to be one to two feet across. These are great for windowsill growers, as they don't take up much space. The album form of Paph venustum puts out a lovely flower, with green and white stripes and a mottled, green and yellow pouch that sometimes reminds us of a sea turtle. This one is native to the southern slopes of the Himalayas in Eastern Nepal, Darjiling (Darjeeling), Sikkim and Bhutan. They are also found in northeastern India. Plants normally grow in humus in dense jungle undergrowth at the base of cliffs, or in dense bamboo thickets. They are somewhat hard to find in cultivation. Here is how the judges described one award winner: "One well-proportioned, albinistic flower on one 19-cm inflorescence; dorsal sepal slightly cupped, translucent white veined dark green; synsepal translucent white veined dark green; petals undulating, hirsute, butter yellow on distal third, veined yellow-green; pouch yellow, veined apple green; substance average; texture crystalline." This plant is blooming size, which we define as likely to flower within a year or so. These have a leaf span of 7 to 8 inches, and we will ship you one freshly repotted in a 3.5 inch pot. Vuylstekeara Cindy 'Pinky Lee' HCC/AOS is a near blooming size clone of the awarded plant, and the flowers will be simply beautiful. A member of the oncidium family, this orchid (Milt. My Clown x Onc. Shonan Pinky) pretty much grows like the proverbial weed. The flowers are just amazing -- relatively large, somewhat mottled and simply stunning. The color consists of wonderful shades of red, purple, pink and lavender, with some yellow in the center. This is a clone of the awarded plant. The judges had this to say about the flowers, about two inches across: "Six flowers and nine buds on two inflorescences; sepals and petals grape-purple, centrally white spotted maroon; lip light purple darker purple margin and frill extended into center, centrally yellow; column white, sides light purple and dark maroon; substance heavy; texture matte." Technically speaking it can also be called a miltonidium. It will be slightly on the cool growing side because of the miltoniopsis in the breeding background. One of the easiest orchids to care for, the species Maxillaria tenuifolia is native to an area from Mexico down to Honduras. These summer bloomers carry long lasting dark red flowers with a spotted lip that smell like coconut, and in fact this is often called The Coconut Orchid. This is a real cutie, and super easy to grow. It's called Howeara Lava Burst and it's an intergeneric hybrid (Howeara Mini-Primi x Rodriguezia lanceolata). But forget all that and just enjoy the bright red flowers when they bloom. They are small, but there are lots of them. Some mature plants can have 100 or more blooms all at once. These guys can flower twice a year, with multiple sprays of deep red, long lasting flowers. This is Odcdm. Everglades Elegance 'Nancy Lee' HCC/AOS, an orchid plant, that will put out lovely wine red, mahogany, white and gold colored flowers. This is a clone of the one that was awarded in 1993. The breeding is Oncidium Colon x Odontoglossum bictoniense. The result is a plant that puts out stunning little flowers and lots of them. The awarded one had 101 flowers like the ones pictured. The flowers were small, about 3.5 cm, but just lovely. And so many! Grower's note: These are really big! They are easy to grow, too. Provide bright indirect light and a temperature range of 60 to 85 degrees. Allow to get almost dry, but not quite, between waterings, like a phal. Fertilize twice a month or so. These are blooming size with two or more pseudobulbs. They are freshly repotted in 4 inch plastic pots. The longest leaves are 8 to 10 inches or more and we always ship the largest. This orchid is Odontocidium Catatante 'Pumpkin Patch.' It will produce flowers that will just amaze you. This kind of plant always gets oohs and ahs at our shows, and it makes a nice addition to any orchid collection. It's easy to grow, too, and makes a great starter plant for beginners. Mature plants can have 4 to 6 long spikes, covered with pumpkin colored flowers. This one is a really nice mericlone of an exceptional plant.. The breeding is Oncidium Sphacetante x Odontocidium Wildcat. The flowers are more than an inch across and there can literally be hundreds of them on mature plants. These orchids are large seedlings, freshly repotted into 4 inch pots in sphagnum moss. The plants stand 8 to 10 inches high already, measured from the bottom of the pot. We think they are likely to bloom within 12 to 24 months or so. They are not in flower now. We have a number of these and we'll pick out a nice one for you. We always ship the largest. This one is Miltassia Charles M Fitch 'Izumi' AM/AOS, a Blooming Size orchid that puts out lovely flowers. A member of the oncidium family, this orchid (Brs varrucosa x Milt spectabilis) blooms twice a year when mature and pretty much grows like the proverbial weed. The flowers are just amazing -- relatively large, somewhat spidery and simply stunning. The color is a wonderful mottled lavender/purple on the petals and sepals, with a little olive green in the background; the large lip is a stunning lavender with some spots in the center. Mature plants can have 6 to 8 flowers per bloom spike and we have seen some grown up specimens with a dozen or more spikes all at once. Spectacular!
